A reengraved reverse die
Lot 996
SELEUKID KINGS. Seleukos I Nikator, 312-281 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 17.04 g, 12 h), Seleukeia on the Tigris I, circa 300-281. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. BAΣIΛΕΩΣ - ΣΕΛEYKOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle with closed wings in his right; to left, monogram within wreath; below throne, K (over erased monogram). SC 117.2b. A rare and interesting variety. Light marks, otherwise, very fine.

Ex Astarte Web Auction 2, 9 December 2023, 154 and from a European collection, formed before 2005.

The reverse die was apparently recut to erase the original throne control and replace it with a K. The original control was probably the ΔΙ monogram of SC 117.2a. The erasure is not noted in SC.
